Our Lady of Good Counsel Senior Secondary School Gayaza

From 2004 to 2020, Dr. Josephine Nabugoomu (Executive Director and Co-founder of Teens Up) while teaching at Our Lady of Good Counsel Senior Secondary School Gayaza mentored and trained over 10,000 female and male students in hand art, cookery, vegetable growing, hygiene, personal health and human rights. Each year, an average of 310 students of year one were trained in making pile floor rugs and door mats, and embroidered wall art pieces while, close to 300 students in year two acquired skills in making knitted scarfs, crocheted scarfs and smoked seat/bed cushions. All students of year one and two were mentored and trained in good personal hygiene and personal health and how to uphold their rights. Students of year three who opted for Foods and Nutrition or Home Management (~60 of them) were trained in making quilted table placemats and backyard growing of vegetables. Josephine who is an advocate of an all round education also trained students of year three, four, five and six in bakery, cookery and fruit preservation. All the hand art and food items were presented to the school parents during an annual Home Economics Exhibition where parents would each take their children’s art work and buy food items to support the Home Economics Department leading to a financially self-sustained and stable department.
